Red Sparrow Directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine, I Am Legend) Written by Justin Haythe (A cure for Wellness, Snitch) Starring Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games, Joy) Joel Edgerton (The Gift, Black Mass) Matthias Schoenaerts (The Drop, The Danish Girl) Charlotte Rampling (45 Years, Swimming Pool) & Mary-Louise Parker (Red, R.I.P.D).
Dominika Egorova is many things. A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs. A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit. A master of seductive and manipulative combat. When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.
I’ll start off with this the movie is a very hard Rated R movie. It is not a substitute for a black widow movie and Jennifer Lawrence is at her best in this film because she is actually trying with this one. Jennifer has this stigma about her where there is no in between. You either love her or hate her. I appreciate the talent that she is but sometimes she doesn’t try and that’s happened lately with the X-men films. This film keeps you guessing because if you’ve seen the trailers you know what the film is going for and for almost the whole film you do not know which side she is on at all. That’s because of how well she plays the role and how well she keeps you believing her character. There is not a lot of action in this film and I think there should have been but with the action scenes that we get it is extremely brutal, violent and sometimes even disturbing. The story is very good and the conclusion is very well done with a great payoff in the end. It’s a slow burn film it is not perfect but it is a very good watch if you like the action suspense thriller type movies. The acting is great keeps you invested in the characters and it is very well directed.
